Pilot Dementia Awareness Project

This project is for people with a learning disability / Down Syndrome and their significant support person. It is funded by the Forest of Dean District Council Community Grant Fund and The Shalom Network Project Lead is Miriam Goldby.

Miriam is one of the Gloucestershire’s Community Dementia Link Workers and The Shalom Network is a Dementia Action Alliance member.

The project aims to:

Educate, support strengthen and empower communities to understand and include people with learning disabilities / Down Syndrome and dementia.

For individuals and their families / cares to better understand the risks and implications of developing and living with dementia and how these can be minimised.

Our initial plan was to run 3 courses, each consisting of 3 workshops in the Lydney, Cinderford and Coleford areas, for people to attend with their significant support person. This has been delayed due to Covid and the subsequent restrictions of the last two years. We are now reviewing how we deliver these courses.

The Course content will include:

  • Learning about what Dementia is and how it can affect Friends and themselves.
  • How people can reduce or delay the risks of developing dementia by living in a healthy way.
  • Making a plan of action that can be applied in their daily lives.

How can you be involved?

  • By letting other people know about this project
  • By signing up for a course (if you have a person with Down Syndrome, have a learning disability or significant support person).
  • By volunteering to support Miriam in the delivery of their courses. Some experience of walking alongside people with an additional need is preferable.
